Article: "Exploring the Effect of Gender and Age on Stress and Emotional Distress in Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder." By McGillivray and Evert, in Focus on Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities, 33, 1.
This study found that, among the people they surveyed, adults with ASD showed higher levels of stress, anxiety and depression than adults without the ASD diagnosis. In addition, females rated higher distress than males in that ASD group. A trend reported is that ASD adults seem to experience more stress and distress as they age. Adults without ASD (i.e., neuro-typicals) tend to see the opposite trend: they experience less stress and distress as they age.
Holy cow. How do we make sense of this?
